Xiaomi launches a new concept of smart glasses exploration version: close to the traditional appearance, supporting functions such as calling, navigation, and taking pictures

Recently, Xiaomi launched a new concept product-Xiaomi Smart Glasses Discovery Edition. Its appearance is almost the same as ordinary glasses, but it has a magical experience.

Xiaomi said, “Wear it, and the picture is vivid in front of your eyes.” According to the introduction, the Xiaomi Smart Glasses Discovery Edition uses MicroLED light guide technology to hide the sesame-sized MicroLED micro display in the frame. The advanced light guide lens allows The light realizes the space shift, and the picture is vividly in front of you, making the smart glasses truly miniaturized. The whole machine weighs 51g and supports calls, display, navigation, photography, and translation.

According to the official introduction, the Xiaomi Smart Glasses Discovery Edition, in order to achieve a similar appearance to ordinary glasses, brings unprecedented challenges to the display and stacking. For this reason, the future-oriented MicroLED display technology was chosen to greatly reduce the structural volume. The display screen is as big as a sesame, perfectly hidden in the frame.

In order to ensure that the light reaches the human eye through the complex optical structure, it still maintains sufficient brightness, this display uses a pure green display solution with higher luminous efficiency, and the brightness of the work can reach 2 million nits. Although it is self-luminous with OLED, it has a longer life span using inorganic materials.

Optical Waveguide technology is a black technology that twists light by 180 degrees. Let the MicroLED screen image hidden in the glasses frame be accurately transmitted to the human eye through countless reflections and diffusions through the microscopic grating structure of the optical waveguide lens.

The grating structure etched on the inner surface of the lens allows the light to be totally reflected in the lens in a special way, directing the light to the human eye. The reflection process is accompanied by countless times of light diffusion, which allows the human eye to see the image from the entire grating area, which greatly expands the wearing tolerance.

All this is done inside a single lens, instead of using complicated multiple lenses, mirrors or half mirrors like existing products. While the optical waveguide technology significantly reduces the size and weight of the device, it is also the only technology that allows smart glasses to approach the form of traditional glasses.

Xiaomi smart glasses integrate 497 micro-sensors and communication modules, so it is not just the “second screen” of the mobile phone, but a brand-new smart terminal with independent operation. In addition to basic notification display, call, etc., it can also independently complete functions such as navigation, camera, teleprompter, image and self-developed voice real-time translation.

Due to the particularity of the glasses, Xiaomi has also formulated key interaction logic, usually try to avoid interruption, and display important information in a timely manner at critical moments.

For example, with the “information notification” function, it is obviously inappropriate to throw all the push notifications on the mobile phone in front of your eyes. Therefore, Xiaomi smart glasses will only screen the most important messages (such as smart home alarms, urgent information from office software, and VIP contacts). People’s information, etc.) to avoid excessively disturbing users.

“Call” is the most natural use scenario for smart glasses. You can directly see the other party’s number when you call. Using the built-in dual-beamforming microphone and speaker, both parties can hear each other clearly.

“Navigation” is very practical in driving and cycling scenes. Xiaomi smart glasses present the road and map in front of you in real time, so that you don’t have to keep your eyes off the road, which is safe and convenient.

Using the camera in front of the glasses, you can also realize the functions of fast “photographing” and “photographing translation”. Using the built-in microphone and the self-developed algorithm of the machine translation team of Xiaomi AI Lab, you can also realize the function of “real-time voice translation”. What you say is converted into text and translated in real time, which is very convenient when traveling. The indicator light will light up when the camera is working to remind the subject to protect privacy.

In order to achieve these functions, the glasses need to integrate a quad-core ARM processor, battery, touchpad, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth module, etc., and run the Android operating system. While integrating these functions, the weight of the whole machine is only 51g.

At present, this is a concept product, and Xiaomi has not announced the information of its mass production version.
